"An Exhibition of New Works by Nobuo Sugino
at Cambridge University Botanic Garden" |
 |
Approximately 60 works were exhibited for five days from June 13 to 17 in an authoritative garden of natural science study, Cambridge University Botanic Garden. Nobuo Sugino is pressed flower artist who established a worldwide network of pressed flowers as a president of IPFAS. He has a prominent talent as an artist. Furthermore, he is involved in the invention of pressed flower techniques as a scientist. Nobuo and his father, Toshiyuki, developed desiccant pressing pads infiltrated with drying agent, which make it possible to achieve bright colored pressed flowers in a few days. He also developed how to seal pressed flower pictures into a frame in order to preserve its colours. This technique has made a revolutionary change in pressed flowers.
The theme he chose for the exhibition in Cambridge is "Japan". 42 new works on the subject of "Mt. Fuji" "Four Seasons in Japan" etc. were exhibited inside. Sugino states: "I would like to express my various thoughts through my creation. I hope that visitors will get my messages without words." His works certainly touched the heartstrings of British people.
The world of botanical art using plants collected in the UK and other countries around the world was introduced outside. To display pressed flowers outside, especially in the UK with a lot of rain - it was unthinkable and a taboo because pressed flowers have a low tolerance to dampness. Nevertheless, he invented waterproof frames by himself and challenged to do the outside display. It is said that Cambridge University Botanic Garden is at its best in June. Waist-high green plants are grown and trimmed paths run into the garden. 22 pressed flower artworks displayed, completely matched with the atmosphere of the garden.
During the exhibition, workshops introducing a basic technique of pressed flowers were held by Nobuo Sugino himself.
