| Japan 2001 "The Art of Oshibana" Report |

From May to March 2002, the projects titled "Japan 2001", introducing Japanese cultures in various aspects such as art and science have taken place across the UK. "The Art of Oshibana" is the only event of pressed flowers which has been officially certified as part of it and contributed to an international exchange in various ways through pressed flowers.

The first worldwide competition which was open to everyone took place on June 16 and 17 at one of the RH Halls-the Lawrence Hall. "The Royal Horticultural Society Halls" called RH Halls are just behind Westminster Roman Catholic Cathedral situated the center of London. The Royal Horticultural Society boasts a long and honorable history of approximately 200 years and has 260,000 members. H.M. Queen Elizabeth is a patron.

The theme is "Pressed Flowers in the New Century", create your pressed flower picture as the new art form. International Pressed Flower Art Society (IPFAS) has a big network of pressed flower artists in the world and invited the artists in 25 countries to the Competition. The Executive Committee received 1,183 entry works from 17 countries. In Japan more than 1,000 entries were judged at the preliminary in three cities, and then 287 works were sent to London. 98 entries were received from other countries. A total of 385 works went to the final judging.

Judges:
Nobuo Sugino (President of International Pressed Flower Art Society), Iris Collins (Former President of the Pressed Flower Guild), Theresa Phillips (Editor of "Fertile Acre Press", USA), Yoshio Oi (Honorary Professor of Joshibi University of Art and Design), Colin Ellis (Council Member of the Royal Horticultural Society), John Parker (Director of Cambridge University Botanic Garden), Masami Tomizawa (Assistant Chief Officer of Culture & Sports Promotions Bureau of the Yomiuri Shimbun)
Judges marked four criteria on a scale of 1 to 5 and summed the scores of 7 judges. They decided the awards from the top works by mutual consent.
Four criteria
- The creative power and originality of the work.
- The feelings and emotions created in the person viewing the picture.
- How well the quality and beauty of the pressed flowers in the picture expresses the beauty of plant life.
- The artistic interpretation of the theme, "Pressed Flowers in the New Century".
